It is vital that all businesses protect the Health and Safety of their staff. As part of their duty to do that they must be aware of the new rules about fire safety that come into force in October 2006. We urge all small firms to check that they have the necessary steps in place to protect their staff and premises from the risk of fire for the sake of both their workers and the viability of their business.
Taking care of your fire protection
The Fire & Rescue Services in the UK attend more than 30,000 fires in the workplace each year. Lives are lost, thousands are injured and the economic costs mean many businesses never recover. New legislation that came into force on 1 October 2006 means that all employers are now responsible for fire safety - one of their obligations is to ensure that a 'responsible' person carries out an annual Fire Risk Assessment. The Fire and Rescue Service are helping to police the new legislation and are charged with carrying out spot checks on businesses. Failure to comply with any of the regulations can lead to enforcement action, a fine or even, and in the worse case scenario, prosecution.
Under these circumstances it makes sense to seek the advice of expert fire consultants. The Fire Division of BusinessWatch works for large manufacturing businesses such as Coloplast as well as many smaller local companies.
The range of services include:
Fire Risk Assessments
This helps you to identify risks that can be removed or reduced, and to decide the nature and extent of the general fire precautions you need to take to protect people against the fire risks that remain. Particular attention is paid to those at special risk, such as the disabled and those with special needs, and will include consideration of any dangerous substance likely to be on the premises.
Fire alarms and systems
BusinessWatch supplies, fits and maintains fire alarms. Our experience ensures that the most appropriate fire prevention, detection, and alarm systems are installed to ensure that fires are detected faster and damage caused is minimised. We take responsibility for every stage of fire alarm system development and implementation, including site surveys, system design, installation, commissioning, monitoring and ongoing maintenance and fire protection service.
We offer a comprehensive range of fire protection products and services that allow us to provide a complete solution to your fire safety needs, whether a new build or an upgrade to existing premises. These include a range of control panels, from simple compact installations for small applications to sophisticated networked products with links to Redcare for 24/7 monitoring.
Fire extinguishers
Ensuring fire extinguishers are adequate and maintained is vital in the prevention of serious fires. BusinessWatch helps you determine what is necessary for your business and maintains them on an annual contract basis.
We also provide a full range of gaseous extinguishing systems appropriate for server and computer rooms as well as carbon monoxide detection devices for hotels, halls of residence and care homes.
Emergency lighting
BusinessWatch provides consultancy and is able to fit all types of emergency lighting and signage. Emergency lighting is vital in cases where the power supply to normal lighting fails. Under BS 5266 there are a number of special lights that are required in any workplace

- For safety signs
- At each final exit point
- At the fire alarm call point
